Guest commentary: "The debate over Chinese automakers entering the United States has grown more nuanced and immediate. This is no longer a distant trade-policy issue. Dealers are fielding competing warnings about what’s coming, and decisions Washington makes could reshape the economics of the franchised dealer system for decades.

Dealers have confronted disruptive change before — Japanese and Korean entry, recessions, bankruptcies, consolidation, electrification, the pandemic — and have usually emerged stronger. But this time may be different.

The challenge isn’t simply another competitor. It’s the potential arrival of manufacturers with scale, aggressive pricing, advanced technology and a different cost structure. For dealers, the critical issue may be less about adapting after Chinese manufacturers arrive and more about influencing the rules of engagement.

President Donald Trump said he would be open to Chinese automakers building vehicles in the U.S., provided they employ American workers. Days later, six major trade organizations, including the National Automobile Dealers Association, urged the administration to prevent Chinese manufacturers from selling, importing or manufacturing vehicles here.

That disagreement exposes the real issue confronting dealers. Whether Chinese-built vehicles arrive at American ports is no longer the main question — tariffs and connected-vehicle restrictions already block that route. The more consequential question is whether Chinese manufacturers gain access through U.S. manufacturing, partnerships, technology licensing or other structures, and under what conditions."
